Useless Fact #2

The fastest way to get drunk is…
Pour your beverage of choice down your ass hole while your upside down.
The alcohol is absorbed by your intestines without being filtered in your liver.

Brighton Rock

When I was in grade school, we had a crap load of Canadian artists hitting the airwaves and it wasn’t hard not liking most of them. We had “Glass Tiger”, “Haywire”, “Platinum Blonde” and “Brighton Rock” to name a few. Remember those Grade School dances before everyone danced in circles…where there would be 2 lines formed, everyone doing there side to side step dance then cross over to the other side and repeat LOL!!! Well this was a great place to listen to new music and because “GLAM ROCK” was in at the time we got to experience Canadiana at it’s best. Well I couldn’t decide which video to choose so here is the two I really enjoyed.

Movie Review - 'Gran Torino'

"Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) has just lost his wife and his children want him to move out of the old neighborhood and move into a senior citizens' home. Walt doesn't want to move even though more Asian people live in his Detroit neighborhood than Americans. Walt has a problem with Asians ever since he fought them in the Korean War. This prejudice explodes when Thao, the teenage son of the Hmong family next door, tries to steal his mint condition 1972 Grand Torino car. Thao (played by Bee Vang) was pressured by an Asian gang to steal the car as an initiation rite. To regain the family's honor, Thao is forced to work for Walt. Walt begins to protect Thao from the gangs and soon he becomes a target."
Well I got to say this movie was not one of the best he's done, it was funny but I wouldn't pay a cent to watch it at the theatre. "Zipperheads"...I never heard that one before...was one of the racial slurs Walt uses to describe his neighbour, so as you could tell it's all about old school mentality. I personally didn't like the acting of Bee Vang "Thao" or his sister "Sue Lor" played by Ahney Her, and the priest...don't even get me started...have you ever heard of acting school??? it had a very "All in the Family", "the Jeffersons" type script between the neighbors but the ending was very surprising. I'll leave it up to you to find that out.

Sweet Child O' Mine

Classic video you might say??? Well yes, it’s been over 20 years since this song came out…I was in grade nine and that’s when I met Sean. We hung out that whole summer before the start of school and he had this tape with tunes I really wasn’t into…I was more into Def Leppard, Europe, Poison, Brian Adams, and all the other crap that was playing on the Northern Ontario radio station at the time. Then when I “really” heard the song Sweet Child O’ Mine and I was blown away by the legendary playing of Slash, and screeching voice of Axl Rose. It fun to know the history of such a great song and when you find out it was made as a joke…Slash played the riff in a jam session as a joke. Drummer Steven Adler and Slash were warming up and Slash began to play a "circus" melody while making faces at Steven. Izzy asked Slash to play it again, and added chords to play with it. With Steven Adler's added drum part, the harmony became the core of the song. The lyrics of the song were originally a poem/love letter to Axl's girlfriend at the time. Bassist Duff McKagan was quoted as saying “The thing about 'Sweet Child,' it was written in five minutes. It was one of those songs, only three chords. You know that guitar lick Slash does at the beginning? It was kinda like a joke because we thought, 'What is this song? It's gonna be nothin', it'll be filler on the record.' And except that vocal-wise, it's very sweet and sincere, Slash was fuckin' around when he first wrote that lick.”
So here it is:

Squash

I recently got back into this game and man is it ever gruelling. If you want to lose weight this is the sport that has it all…it’s a great cardio workout as well as an excellent aerobic workout and all you need is a racquet and ball, a buddy and a place to play.
The rules of the game are simple. Games are usually played to 9 points (alternatively, the receiver may opt to call "set two" and play to 10 when the score first reaches 8-8). Competition matches are usually played to "best-of-five".

Squash Racquet and ball

Double Yellow Ball (very tough)
The Court
The squash court is a playing surface surrounded by four walls. The court surface contains a half court line, separating the left and right hand sides of the court, and a front line separating the front and back of the court, creating three 'boxes' - the front half, the back left quarter and the back right quarter. Both the back two boxes contain smaller services boxes. All of the floor-markings on a squash court are only relevant during serves.

There are four walls to a squash court. The front wall, on which three parallel lines are marked, has the largest playing surface, while the back wall, which typically contains the entrance to the court, has the smallest. The out line runs along the top of the front wall, descending along the side walls to the back wall. Shots struck above this line are out. The bottom line of the front wall marks the top of the 'tin', a half meter-high metal area which if struck means that the ball is out. The middle line of the front wall is the service line and is only relevant during serves.
Service
The players usually spin a racket to decide who commences serving at the start of the match. This player starts the first rally by electing to serve from either the left or right service box. For a legal serve, one of the server's feet must be in that box (while neither foot may lie beyond the front line across the middle of the court) and, after being struck by the racket, the ball must strike the front wall above the service line and below the out line and land in the opposite quarter court. The receiving player can chose to volley a serve (hit the ball before it hits the floor) after it has hit the front wall. If a server wins a point, the two players switch sides for the following point.
Play
After the serve, the players take turns hitting the ball against the front wall, above the tin and below the out line. The ball may strike the side or back walls at any time, as long as this is below the out line, though it must not hit the floor after hitting the racket and before hitting the front wall. A ball landing on either the out line or the line above the tin, contrary to tennis, is considered to be out. After the ball hits the front wall, it is allowed to bounce once on the floor (and any number of times against the side or back walls) before a player must return it.
Now only time and practice will make you better and maybe you might even make me break a sweat if we were to ever meet LOL!!!

Diego's Hockey Tournament

What a fun Hockey Tournament. Diego’s team, Onaping Falls Huskies entered their first tournament of the season and it was pretty exciting. Just like their regular season, they lost every game but damn, Diego is getting better. He won game MVP on for the second game they played and also played a MVP quality third game. He is #16 and plays right Defence. I got to say he was doing his job well. He’ll be lifting sticks in front of the net totally pissing off the other kids to the point where they almost got penalties as with the case near the end of the third game where the other kid started hitting Diego cause he was bugging him so much…so close to a penalty…ref was just about to lift his hand when the play moved outside the blue line and the kid just took off…That’s My Boy.

When you see your kid doing well it makes you feel proud and I’m sure everyone who has kids knows what I’m talking about. Emma was great in bowling she even went to the regional's one year. It kind of sucks that we are far enough from the city that we can’t bring Emma or Olivia to any practice for whatever sport they want to join but by summer we are hoping to move a lot closer and get them involved.

Games and Growing Up

Why is it that when your all grown up, playing games on Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii seem so childish…well childish to the significant other that is LOL...not my significant other that's for sure, she enojys it just as much as me!!! Playing games is great especially if you have a long and by long I mean decades long rivalry with a close friend that when crushing them in NHL Hockey is like winning the Stanley Cup!!! Ya I know it sounds childish but it’s such a release from everyday “Grown Up” life and responsibilities. If you were to video tape all the times Sean and I played hockey, soccer, football, golf or whatever sports game is out there you would laugh your ass off…and I bet we would even win on Americans Funniest Videos…not the Bob Saget era either ‘cause man did he suck. You gotta love the words that come out of our mouths, the thrown joysticks, the never ending “You Cheat” phrase…damn I’m itching for a game again.

So when are you too old to play video games? I don’t know and will probably never know and who cares. It’s something that I have done since I was a kid…don’t get me wrong, I did live in an era where playing outside was more important. I still play soccer, squash, any sport that I was good at, but getting the satisfaction of kicking someone’s ass without laying a finger on them is priceless!

Happy New Year

Well it’s 2009 and what can I say, I guess whatever was done in 2008, forget about it…the past is the past, it’s time to make your new future.

New Years Eve was a quiet one this year, LeeAnne, the kids and myself went to my bro’s house and spent a lovely evening with my parents. We had a wonderful meal with the traditional Shrimp and Crab snack before the big ball drop in Times Square. It was a happy occasion since my Dad is recovering from a major stroke and was with us to celebrate. Such a strong man…even though I know how he is very sad and thinks of how he was and if he will ever be that same person again. I know he will get better, it just takes a lot of time and patience.

Poor Johnny Boy had to work today…don’t worry, 7 years to have Christmas & New Years off is just around the corner LOL!!!

Well Happy New Year everyone!
