The Year of the Social Networking Sites

Funny how networking sites like “Facebook”, “My Space”, “Bebo” and the little used “Windows Live Spaces” have all surfaced the past couple of years with “Facebook” becoming the widely used site. Remember “Classmates”? They probably would have been the site if it wasn’t for the paid membership bull crap. I guess it all depends on what you like. If you like prying on so called acquaintances' lives, being the person with the most so called friends, having people know how many relationships you are in or have been…the list goes on…then “Facebook is the place for you. Hey don’t get me wrong, I’m just as guilty as everyone else and enjoy it too… but isn’t the real reason for such sites is to keep in touch with real friends? friends that actually care about what you put on? I use to have my own web site where I would actually take my time and be proud of what people thought about it. Then I started using “Windows Spaces” which I thought was the best thing out there cause all my messenger contacts and anyone in my network could have viewed what I put on plus the Blog feature was an asset…didn’t use it much but it was alright. Then Google came out with blogger…excellent for keeping people up to date with all the things going on in your life. I had fun with this, changing backgrounds adding photos letting people know what is going on but one catch…if you really wanted it to be more practical you needed to add third party software like Picasa by Google for picture uploading, register an account but like all other things I've done it has died down…as the acronym “K.I.S.S.” suggests (keep it simple stupid)…well that’s what I have done…lo and behold the brain killer “Facebook”. It was great at the beginning but getting requests to be someone friend, even if I didn’t talk to them my whole adolescent life and feeling bad for not accepting it well that changed the whole scene. I got caught up…I started doing it, getting useless applications, accepting useless applications and “Spying” on everyone which I’m sure everyone was doing to me. Well I kind of stopped using it in a way, haven’t added photos, rarely change my status, the occasional “Have a great Birthday” wall post blah blah blah. There is a High School reunion I’m going to next year and It will be great to see all the people I went to school with but where is the mystery, the what ever happed to, wow you look great…what’s the point you already know what they look like, how many kids, marital status all those great things I thought you would look forward to asking when you saw someone. Ah well it’s just going to be a drunk fest anyways, what better excuse. Now if you like checking status updates by all means “Facebook” is the place for you. I think I will use it as a waste my time space.

I think I will start using “Windows Live Spaces” from now on…by adding pictures, blogging, and letting all my close friends know what is going on. I think Kris Macdonald has done it right from the very beginning. He uses Blogger and has used it since Kallie was born and it showcases everything from life in general, his & Mel’s thoughts, plus it’s basically an online scrapbook of Kallie’s Life and it’s all in one place (sorry Kris for using you as an example but you did it right).

I don’t know who will read this, don’t want to offend anyone but it’s my own personal opinion. If you have any thoughts or your own opinions feel free to discuss cause that’s what this is all about.
